First-time setup and success checks
Lesson goal in plain language: Run Writer's Accessibility Check, correct the identified issues, and export an accessible PDF.
Prepare before step 1
- Open the correct application, website, or device screen and wait for its name to be announced.
- Open Writer manual and review the matching procedure if any command or term is unfamiliar.
- Use only fictional, public, disposable, or instructor-provided practice information. Make a copy before changing an important file.
- Read all numbered instructions once before performing them so you know the intended final result.
Commands used or referenced
Tab, Shift+Tab, Insert+Tab,, NVDA+Tab,
For a plus-sign command, hold the modifier key, press and release the final key, then release the modifier. For a sequence, press and release each key in order. Stop after every command and listen for the result.
Work and verify
- Perform one numbered instruction and stop. Identify the active window, focused control, selected item, cell, slide, message, field, or device area before continuing.
- Compare the result with the lesson goal. A sound alone is not enough; verify the name, state, value, location, permission, or content.
- If the result is wrong, press Escape once to leave an unexpected menu, identify focus again, and use Undo only when the change is safely reversible.
- Save or synchronize at natural stopping points. Confirm the filename and location before closing.
- Complete the “Before submitting” checklist from top to bottom. Correct missing items before marking the lesson complete.
- Close and reopen the practice item, or return to it from the product’s main screen, to prove you can locate and verify the result independently.
Success standard: Explain what each major command did, show the finished result, and recover from one harmless focus or navigation error without another person naming the next key.
Goal
Run Writer's Accessibility Check, correct the identified issues, and export an accessible PDF.
Prepare safely
- Use LibreOffice Writer or complete the written alternative if the program or account is unavailable.
- Do not purchase software, begin a paid trial, or enter payment information.
- Use fictional or public information only.
- Create a practice folder and confirm the active account, filename, and location before saving.
Step-by-step instructions
- Read the LibreOffice Writer manual sections on accessibility, screen readers, file formats, and compatibility.
- Open LibreOffice Writer and confirm the window title or browser tab, active file, and current account when applicable.
- Navigate the main controls using only the keyboard. Record the labels announced by JAWS, Narrator, or NVDA.
- Run Writer's Accessibility Check, correct the identified issues, and export an accessible PDF.
- Save frequently in the program’s preferred editable format. If working in a browser, confirm that changes are saved before closing.
- Review the work from the beginning using keyboard and screen-reader navigation. Correct unclear structure, labels, or data.
- Create a separate Microsoft-compatible or requested exchange copy. Do not overwrite the editable original.
- Open or re-import the exchange copy when possible and compare content, formatting, formulas, notes, links, and accessibility.
- Write a short compatibility report naming anything that changed and how it was corrected.
- Save the submission using the filename libreoffice-writer-Lesson-8.odt.
Screen-reader help: Use Tab and Shift+Tab for controls and listen to the current accessible name. JAWS users can use Insert+Tab, NVDA users NVDA+Tab, and Narrator users Scan Mode commands when appropriate. Application and web-editor commands may differ after updates.
