Lesson 2 of 10. You may study lessons in any order. Complete and mark all ten before the final quiz.
Your goal
Open the official reader for your device, identify the account and bookshelf, and name the controls used to select and open a book.
Before starting
Use your own authorized practice account or a harmless practice document. Identify the active application and the focused control before each command. Keep these instructions in a separate window. Never include passwords or private messages in your learning notes.
Follow the product and device version named in each procedure. A plus sign means hold the modifier while pressing the final key; “then” means release before continuing. These procedures are documentation-based and have not been tested here with the actual assistive software or signed-in reading accounts.
Choose and open your reading app
What you will learn: Use the official application for your device.
Exactly how to do it
- Open Learning Ally’s app page and choose the web reader or the download for your supported device.
- Sign in with the reader’s approved access method.
- Explore the bookshelf and navigation controls before opening an important assignment.
What should happen: You can identify the account and reading environment you are using.
If that does not happen: A school management screen and the student reading screen serve different purposes. Ask the account administrator if you cannot reach the reading area.
Practice: Find the bookshelf, the search function, and the way back to your current book.

Open and use Learning Ally on iPhone, iPad, or Android
Start here: An approved Learning Ally account and an internet connection. Use the separate VoiceOver or TalkBack directions below.
Step-by-step instructions
- From Learning Ally’s official app page, follow the link for your device’s app store. Confirm the application and developer before installing it, then open the app.
- Follow the sign-in route your school or membership requires. Pause to identify each field before typing, especially if a school service opens another sign-in screen.
- Explore the bookshelf and locate the intended title. Activate it and inspect its reading or download options. Complete a download if you intend to read offline.
- Open the book. Navigate to the playback control by its spoken label and activate it. Pause again before navigating chapter or study controls.
- Use the app’s chapter, section, or page navigation to select a known passage. Confirm it by its heading or opening words, then resume playback.
- Before leaving the app, record your passage and check any bookmark or note you created. If you switch devices, connect both as needed and verify where the book opens.
Check your result
You can use the mobile player through labeled controls and return to a known reading location.
If something goes wrong
If one tap only speaks a control instead of activating it, your mobile screen reader is doing its normal focus action; use its activation gesture below. If the app reports an access error, resolve the membership or login route rather than reinstalling repeatedly.
Try it yourself
Open a book, play a passage, pause it, change chapters, and return using a saved marker.

Your practice assignment
Open the official reader for your device, identify the account and bookshelf, and name the controls used to select and open a book.
Check your work before marking complete
- Identify the starting application, account, device, or keyboard layout used for this task.
- Demonstrate each part of the goal above and describe the result after each action.
- Return to the saved item, passage, or starting setting when the task calls for it.
- Explain one problem you encountered or could encounter and the recovery step you would use.
- Record whether you worked independently, needed a prompt, or used the written alternative.
If the application, membership, or device is unavailable: complete a written walkthrough of this exact assignment. Include the starting context, ordered actions, expected results, and one recovery step. Label it “written alternative — not tested on the device.” The completion record is self-reported, not an instructor-verified skills assessment.
Keep your notes locally, for example learning-ally-lesson-2.txt. No assignment upload is required. Use your anonymous Student ID to save lesson completion below; you can undo it.
