Copilot Lesson 5

Summarize Public Documents and Verify Key Points

First-time setup and success checks

Lesson goal in plain language: Summarize a public document and verify five key points against the original.

Prepare before step 1

  1. Open the correct application, website, or device screen and wait for its name to be announced.
  2. Open Copilot manual and review the matching procedure if any command or term is unfamiliar.
  3. Use only fictional, public, disposable, or instructor-provided practice information. Make a copy before changing an important file.
  4. Read all numbered instructions once before performing them so you know the intended final result.

Commands used or referenced

Tab, Shift+Tab

For a plus-sign command, hold the modifier key, press and release the final key, then release the modifier. For a sequence, press and release each key in order. Stop after every command and listen for the result.

Work and verify

  1. Perform one numbered instruction and stop. Identify the active window, focused control, selected item, cell, slide, message, field, or device area before continuing.
  2. Compare the result with the lesson goal. A sound alone is not enough; verify the name, state, value, location, permission, or content.
  3. If the result is wrong, press Escape once to leave an unexpected menu, identify focus again, and use Undo only when the change is safely reversible.
  4. Save or synchronize at natural stopping points. Use the required filename copilot-Lesson-5.txt.
  5. Complete the “Before submitting” checklist from top to bottom. Correct missing items before marking the lesson complete.
  6. Close and reopen the practice item, or return to it from the product’s main screen, to prove you can locate and verify the result independently.

Success standard: Explain what each major command did, show the finished result, and recover from one harmless focus or navigation error without another person naming the next key.

Goal

Summarize a public document and verify five key points against the original.

Before you begin

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open the Microsoft Copilot manual and review the prompting, verification, privacy, and screen-reader sections.
  2. Open an available AI tool in a regular browser tab. If an account or feature is unavailable, study the sample prompt and write the expected process instead.
  3. Navigate by headings and form controls. Find the prompt edit field and confirm its label before typing.
  4. Use this practice prompt or adapt it without adding private information:
Act as an accessible workplace skills coach. Help me summarize a public document and verify five key points against the original. Use fictional or public information only. Organize the response with descriptive headings and numbered steps. Identify anything I must verify.
  5. Read the complete response by heading, paragraph, list item, and link. Do not assume the first answer is correct.
  6. Send at least one follow-up prompt that improves clarity, accuracy, accessibility, or completeness.
  7. Verify important claims using the original source or another authoritative source. Record unsupported statements and corrections.
  8. Edit the final result in your own words. Remove generic, inaccurate, biased, or unnecessary content.
  9. Create a short process note naming the tool, prompts used, facts checked, changes made, and remaining uncertainty.
  10. Save the assignment as copilot-Lesson-5.txt.

Screen-reader help: JAWS and NVDA users can press H for headings, B for buttons, and E for edit fields in browse mode. Narrator users can navigate with Scan Mode. Press Tab and Shift+Tab for interactive controls. Because AI interfaces change frequently, listen to each control’s current accessible name.

Your assignment

Summarize a public document and verify five key points against the original.

Include the original prompt, at least one follow-up prompt, a revised result, a verification record, and a one-paragraph reflection on what required human judgment.

Save it as copilot-Lesson-5.txt. DOCX, PDF, and BRF versions are also accepted.
