First-time keyboard guide
Use this short routine before following the NLS Braille eReader EMZ-20 Manual procedures. It explains exactly how the keyboard directions in this manual work.
Press a single key
- Find the named key without pressing it if possible.
- Press and release the key one time. Do not hold it unless the step specifically says to hold it.
- Stop and listen to the full screen-reader announcement before pressing another key.
Press a keyboard combination
- When a command contains a plus sign, such as Ctrl+S, hold down the first key.
- While continuing to hold the first key, press and release the final key once.
- Release the first key. The plus sign is not a key and should not be pressed.
- Listen for the expected result described in the procedure. If nothing changes, verify that the correct application or webpage has focus and try the command once more.
Press a sequence of keys
- When keys are separated by commas or the word “then,” press and release them in order instead of holding them together.
- After each key, listen for a menu, tab, control, or new screen before continuing.
- If the announcement does not match the step, press Escape once to close the current menu or dialog and restart that procedure.
Know which navigation key to try
- Tab and Shift+Tab: move forward and backward among buttons, links, fields, and other controls.
- Arrow keys: move inside menus, lists, groups of choices, text, and many screen-reader reading views.
- Enter: opens the selected item or activates the focused command.
- Space: activates many buttons and checks or clears checkboxes. In a text field, Space types a space.
- Escape: cancels or closes the current menu, list, or dialog without intentionally accepting a change.
Verify before moving on
- Listen for the window, page, or application name so you know where focus is.
- Perform only one numbered step.
- Compare what the screen reader announces with the “What should happen” information in the procedure.
- If the result is wrong, stop. Use the procedure’s recovery directions, Escape to cancel, or Ctrl+Z to undo when that command is supported.
- Continue only after you can identify the result. Save completed work with Ctrl+S whenever the application supports saving.
First complete independent workflow
This rehearsal joins existing procedures into one uninterrupted session without repeating their directions. Follow the linked procedure when a step names it, then return here for the next verification.
Safety check: Confirm the exact device model, firmware or software version, active connection, battery level, and storage location before using a command.
- Open NLS Braille eReader EMZ-20 Manual and wait until its name, starting screen, or connected-device status is announced.
- Choose a fictional, public, disposable, or instructor-provided practice item. Do not use private client, student, medical, financial, or account-recovery information.
- Open 2.1 Orient the Device Correctly. Read its “What you will learn,” “Before you begin,” keyboard-command, and expected-result information before pressing anything.
- Complete that procedure one numbered action at a time. After each key, stop and identify what changed before continuing.
- State the result aloud or record it in a practice note. If it differs from “What should happen,” use that procedure’s recovery directions before advancing.
- Continue directly to 2.2 Learn the Perkins Keyboard by Touch without closing the application or device session. First confirm that focus, account, file, book, conversation, or project context is still correct.
- Complete the second procedure and verify the resulting name, state, location, permission, value, or content. Do not rely only on a success sound.
- Save or synchronize when the product supports it. Wait for the completed state before disconnecting a device, closing a browser, or switching accounts.
- Continue to 4.1 Left Side. Use the exact command listed there; if the command varies by model or version, use Keyboard Help, the product’s shortcut list, or the linked official reference instead of guessing.
- Introduce one harmless recoverable error, such as opening the wrong menu or moving focus away. Press Escape once, identify the active window or device area, and return to the correct step.
- Review the finished practice item from its beginning. Confirm its title or filename, structure, content, destination, sharing state, and saved or synchronized status as applicable.
- Close and reopen the item or return to it from the product’s main screen. The workflow is complete only when you can locate it and verify the same result independently.
Success standard: Complete all three linked tasks, explain the commands used, recover from the practice error, and locate the finished result without another person directing the next key.

Official NLS Braille eReader Zoomax User Guide
Purpose: This manual is written directly to the person learning the NLS Braille eReader model EMZ-20. It assumes you may be touching the device for the first time. Every procedure identifies exactly where a button or port is located, what to press, what should appear on the 20-cell braille display, and what to do if the result is different.
Device identity: The EMZ-20 is the Zoomax version of the NLS Braille eReader. NLS also distributes a different HumanWare 20-cell eReader. The button layout and commands are not interchangeable.
Official reference: This manual is original training material based on the current NLS Braille eReader Zoomax User Guide and Getting Started information from the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, Library of Congress.
How to Use This Manual
Begin with Parts 1 through 7 even if you already know braille. They teach the physical layout and command system used throughout the rest of the device.
Orient the device with the 20 braille cells closest to your body unless a procedure says otherwise.
Dot 7 is the Backspace key. Dot 8 is the Enter key.
The six Display keys are D1, D2, D3 on the left and D4, D5, D6 on the right.
The four System keys are S1 and S2 on the far-left front area, and S3 and S4 on the far-right front area.
The two large rectangular front keys are BL and BR. They act like Space for many commands and act as panning keys while reading a book.
The five center navigation keys are N-Left, N-Up, N-Right, N-Down, and N-Center.
Do one action, then stop and read the display before pressing another key.
When you forget a command, use S3 to open the Context Menu or open Help from the Main Menu.
Part 1 - Identify the EMZ-20 and What It Does
The EMZ-20 is the Zoomax NLS Braille eReader. It is a 20-cell refreshable braille display and standalone electronic braille reader distributed through NLS network libraries. It can read electronic braille and other supported documents, download NLS content through BARD, use external storage, and function as a braille display for compatible computers and Apple mobile devices.

USB-A for NLS cartridge cable or USB flash drive.
SD-card slot for external storage.
Wi-Fi for BARD and NFB-NEWSLINE.
Bluetooth for compatible external screen-reader devices.
Part 2 - Physical Layout: Top Surface
2.1 Orient the Device Correctly
What you will learn: Place the EMZ-20 in the correct position before learning any buttons.
Before you begin: Place the device on a stable surface.
Exactly how to do it
Find the long row of 20 refreshable braille cells. Rotate the device until those cells are closest to your body.
Keep the device in that orientation for all physical descriptions in this manual.
Place both index fingers lightly on the braille cells and move from the leftmost cell to the rightmost cell.
Move your fingertips slightly toward the back of the device. Directly behind each braille cell is a small round cursor-routing button.
Move farther toward the back to locate the Perkins-style braille keyboard.
What should happen: The braille cells are along the front/top edge closest to you, routing buttons are immediately behind them, and the braille keyboard is farther back.
If that does not happen: If you cannot identify the row of 20 cells, do not press keys. Rotate the unit until the long line of braille cells is nearest you.
Practice: With the unit powered off, find cells, routing buttons, and keyboard three times.
2.2 Learn the Perkins Keyboard by Touch
Layout: From the center toward the left are dots 1, 2, 3, and dot 7. From the center toward the right are dots 4, 5, 6, and dot 8. Dot 7 also serves as Backspace; dot 8 also serves as Enter. The Space key is centered below/between the braille input groups.
Left-hand group from inner to outer: dot 1, dot 2, dot 3, dot 7.
Right-hand group from inner to outer: dot 4, dot 5, dot 6, dot 8.
Dot 7 = Backspace.
Dot 8 = Enter.
Center Space is used by itself and in chord commands.
Part 3 - Physical Layout: Front Controls
Along the angled front panel closest to you are eleven controls. Learn them by moving from the outside edges toward the center.

Keyboard lock: Pressing S1 and S4 together toggles keyboard lock. When locked, the display reads keyboard locked. Press S1+S4 again, or use the Power On button as described by NLS, to unlock.
Part 4 - Physical Layout: Left and Right Sides
4.1 Left Side
With the braille cells closest to you, feel along the LEFT SIDE from front to back.
Front corner: lanyard attachment point.
Behind the lanyard point: SD-card slot.
The braille letters “sd” are above the SD-card slot.
4.2 Right Side
With the braille cells closest to you, feel along the RIGHT SIDE from front to back. The order is critical because this is where power and charging are located.
Front corner: lanyard attachment point.
Immediately behind it: small round POWER ON button. Braille “on” is above it.
Immediately behind Power On: small round POWER OFF button. Braille “off” is above it.
Behind the power buttons: USB-C port. This is the charging port and the port used for USB computer connection.
Farthest toward the back: USB-A port. This accepts a USB flash drive or the NLS cartridge cable.
Braille “usb” is centered over the two USB ports, with “c” over USB-C and “a” over USB-A.
Back edge: The back edge has no buttons or ports.
Part 5 - Charging the Battery
5.1 Charge the EMZ-20
What you will learn: Connect the correct cable to the correct port.
Before you begin: Orient the device with the braille cells closest to you. Find the RIGHT side.
Exactly how to do it
Feel from the front-right lanyard point toward the back: Power On, Power Off, then USB-C. Stop at USB-C. It is directly behind the two power buttons.
Take the smaller USB-C end of the supplied charging cable.
Insert it into the USB-C port. USB-C is reversible, so either orientation is acceptable.
Connect the larger USB-A end to the supplied AC adapter.
Plug the AC adapter into a wall outlet.
Allow about three hours for a full charge when needed.
The original Zoomax guide describes roughly ten hours of use per charge; actual battery life varies with settings, battery age, wireless use, and power-saving behavior.
What should happen: The eReader charges through the USB-C port on the right side behind the Power Off button.
If that does not happen: If the plug does not enter easily, stop and make sure you are at USB-C rather than the USB-A port. Never force the connector. Try the supplied adapter/cable and another outlet if charging does not begin.
Practice: Locate USB-C correctly three times before connecting power.
Part 6 - Power On, Power Off, and Suspend
6.1 Turn the EMZ-20 On
What you will learn: Start the device and recognize the startup sequence.
Before you begin: Charge the eReader first.
Exactly how to do it
Orient the device with braille cells closest to you.
On the RIGHT side, start at the front lanyard point and move slightly toward the back to the first small round button. This is Power On.
Press the Power On button once.
Listen for three ascending tones.
Read the display. “starting” appears briefly, followed by “NLS eReader Zoomax,” then startup progress.
Wait. Do not press navigation keys while startup is still occurring.
When startup finishes, you hear another ascending tone sequence and the display reaches the Main Menu, normally at Book Reader.
What should happen: Book Reader or the top Main Menu item appears and the eReader is ready.
If that does not happen: If nothing happens, connect power and try Power On again. Make sure you pressed the FIRST of the two small round power buttons, not Power Off.
Practice: Power the unit on and identify when startup is complete.
6.2 Turn the EMZ-20 Off
What you will learn: Shut down without confusing Power Off with Suspend.
Before you begin: Save/finish any current task first.
Exactly how to do it
On the RIGHT side, find the two small round power buttons. Power Off is the SECOND one, directly behind Power On.
Press Power Off once.
Listen for descending tones and read the Off menu.
Move to Power Off if it is not already selected.
Press Enter (dot 8), N-Center, or the routing button corresponding to the Power Off choice as appropriate.
Wait while shutdown progress appears. Do not disconnect power or press other keys until shutdown is complete.
What should happen: The display goes blank after the shutdown sequence.
If that does not happen: If the device enters Suspend instead, wake it with Power On and repeat, carefully selecting Power Off from the Off menu.
Practice: Practice locating Power On and Power Off by touch while the device is already off.
6.3 Suspend Mode
Suspend uses less power and lets you resume quickly. The eReader can enter Suspend after inactivity according to its settings. You can also select Suspend from the Main Menu or from the menu opened with the Power Off button. Wake from Suspend by pressing Power On.
Part 7 - Learn the Braille Keyboard
Braille letters and commands are entered with dot keys and Space. Commands written as “Space with letter” mean hold Space while pressing the dots that form that braille letter, then release.

8.1 Return to the Main Menu from Anywhere
What you will learn: Use a reliable “home” command when you get lost.
Before you begin: The device is on.
Exactly how to do it
Press S1, the far-left outer small round System key on the front panel.
Alternatively, hold Space and press the braille letter m (dots 1-3-4).
Read the menu item now shown.
Use N-Up/N-Down to identify nearby Main Menu items.
What should happen: You return to the Main Menu.
If that does not happen: If the display reads keyboard locked, press S1+S4 together to unlock, then press S1 again.
Practice: From Book Reader, Settings, and File Manager, return to Main Menu.
Part 9 - Menu Navigation and First-Letter Navigation
9.1 Move Through Menus
What you will learn: Choose menu items deliberately.
Before you begin: Be on any menu.
Exactly how to do it
Press N-Down once to move to the next item. You can also use D3.
Stop and read the 20-cell display.
Press N-Down again only after identifying the current item.
Press N-Up to move to the previous item.
When the desired item is displayed, press Enter (dot 8), N-Center, or a cursor-routing button over the item where supported.
What should happen: The selected menu/submenu opens.
If that does not happen: If the wrong item opens, press Space+e to go back and repeat one item at a time.
Practice: Open Settings and return to Main Menu.
9.2 Use First-Letter Navigation
What you will learn: Jump to an item without stepping through every menu entry.
Before you begin: Be in a menu or list that supports first-letter navigation.
Exactly how to do it
Type the first braille letter of the item you want.
Read the item that appears.
If another item begins with the same letter, type the same letter again to move to the next matching item.
Press Enter on the correct item.
What should happen: The display jumps to an item beginning with that letter.
If that does not happen: Some book lists use first-letter typing as a filter rather than simply jumping. Use Backspace (dot 7) to clear the filter in BARD lists.
Practice: From Main Menu, use the first letter for Settings or File Manager.
Part 10 - Context Menu and Global Commands
10.1 Use the Context Menu
What you will learn: Find commands available for what you are currently doing.
Before you begin: Be in a menu, file list, book, or other application context.
Exactly how to do it
Press S3, the small round System key second from the far-right side of the front panel.
Read the first Context Menu item.
Use N-Up/N-Down through actions.
Press Enter or a routing button on the desired action.
To cancel, press Space+e (dots 1-5).
What should happen: A context-specific action runs or the menu closes.
If that does not happen: If S3 does not give the command you expected, the available actions may differ in the current application. Use S2 for that application’s main menu or Help for command lists.
Practice: Open S3 in Book Reader and File Manager and compare the options.
Part 11 - Reading 20-Cell Braille and Panning
11.1 Pan Through Text Longer Than 20 Cells
What you will learn: Read a line or paragraph in segments.
Before you begin: Open a book or document.
Exactly how to do it
Read the current 20 cells from left to right.
To move forward, press D5, N-Right, or BR while reading a book.
Read the next displayed segment.
To move backward, press D2, N-Left, or BL while reading a book.
Repeat until you have read the passage.
What should happen: The display advances or retreats through the text.
If that does not happen: If the keys move a menu selection rather than the text, you are probably not inside an open book/document.
Practice: Read a passage requiring at least four pans and return to its beginning.
Part 12 - Book Reader Basics
12.1 Open Book Reader
What you will learn: Open the built-in reading application.
Before you begin: Be at Main Menu.
Exactly how to do it
Use N-Up/N-Down until Book Reader appears, or type b until Book Reader is selected.
Press Enter.
Read the Book Reader menu.
Choose Current Book to resume the last book, or Book List to choose another title.
Press S4 from almost anywhere when you want to return directly to the current book at your last reading position.
What should happen: A book opens or the Book Reader list appears.
If that does not happen: If Current Book says the book is empty, open Book List and choose an available title.
Practice: Open a book, exit, then reopen it with S4.

Line behavior: Book Reader can be set so moving down a line goes to the left margin or keeps the same horizontal cell position. The documented toggle is k (dots 1-3).
Part 14 - Where Am I, Autoscroll, Word Wrap, and Reflow
14.1 Find Your Position in a Book
What you will learn: Ask the eReader where you are.
Before you begin: Be inside an open book.
Exactly how to do it
Press the braille “wh” sign, dots 1-5-6.
Read the position information.
Note the volume, page, line, and character information that is available.
Dismiss the message with Enter/N-Center if needed.
What should happen: Position information appears.
If that does not happen: If the command does not work, verify that the book has focus and consult Help > Keyboard Commands for your firmware.
Practice: Check your position before and after moving several pages.
14.2 Use Autoscroll
What you will learn: Read without manually pressing a pan key each display.
Before you begin: Autoscroll must be enabled in Book Reader Settings.
Exactly how to do it
Inside a book, press the braille st-sign, dots 3-4.
Read while the display advances automatically.
To slow the rate, press dots 3-4 with dot 7.
To increase the rate, press dots 3-4 with dot 8.
Press dots 3-4 again to stop Autoscroll.
What should happen: The display advances automatically at the selected speed.
If that does not happen: If nothing happens, open Settings > Book Reader Settings and make sure Autoscroll is on.
Practice: Start Autoscroll, change speed once, then stop it.
Word Wrap and Reflow: Word Wrap prevents ordinary words from being split across the 20-cell display. The documented Word Wrap toggle is w-chord (dots 2-4-5-6). Book reflow can also be enabled in Book Reader Settings to improve 20-cell presentation.
Part 15 - BARD: Wi-Fi and First Login
Before BARD can be used directly from the eReader, the device must have a working Wi-Fi connection and permanent BARD credentials.
15.1 Open NLS BARD
What you will learn: Reach the BARD application.
Before you begin: Connect to Wi-Fi first.
Exactly how to do it
Press S1 for Main Menu.
Navigate to Online Services, or type o (dots 1-3-5).
Press Enter.
Navigate to NLS BARD.
Press Enter.
What should happen: The NLS BARD menu opens.
If that does not happen: If BARD cannot access online content, confirm Wi-Fi connection under Settings > Wi-Fi Settings.
Practice: Open BARD and return to Online Services.
15.2 Log in to BARD the First Time
What you will learn: Enter your BARD credentials correctly in braille.
Before you begin: You need a permanent BARD username/password; temporary passwords must be changed through a web browser first.
Exactly how to do it
Open NLS BARD.
Choose User login if you are not automatically prompted.
Enter your BARD username in uncontracted UEB unless you intentionally select another input code from the Context Menu.
Enter your permanent BARD password.
For email addresses in UEB, enter the at-sign and period using correct UEB symbols; numbers require a number sign.
If you prefer computer braille or another available input mode, press S3 and choose the desired code before entering credentials.
Confirm the login.
What should happen: A successful login message appears and future BARD sessions can log in automatically.
If that does not happen: If login fails, verify the credentials on another device, make sure the password is permanent, and confirm your braille input code.
Practice: Open the User Login area and identify the fields without changing a working login.
Part 16 - BARD: Browse, Search, Download, and Wish List
The BARD menu includes Browse BARD, Search BARD, Wish list, User login, and Exit.
16.1 Download and Open a Book from BARD
What you will learn: Find a title and begin reading it.
Before you begin: Wi-Fi and BARD login must be working.
Exactly how to do it
Open BARD.
Choose Browse BARD or Search BARD.
If browsing, choose Most Recent Books, Most Popular Books, Magazine Issues, or Previous Downloads.
If searching, choose Book Title, Author Name, Subjects, or Keyword.
Navigate the result list. In BARD lists, typing letters filters titles; press Backspace (dot 7) to clear the typed filter.
Press Enter on a title for more information.
Read the title, author, and description as desired.
Navigate to Download and Open if you want to read immediately, or Download if you want to continue browsing.
Press Enter.
Wait for the download to complete.
What should happen: The title is added to your Book List; Download and Open also starts the book in Book Reader.
If that does not happen: If download fails, verify Wi-Fi, BARD login, and available device storage.
Practice: Search for a known title and reach the information screen without downloading unless desired.
Wish List: From a book information screen or Context Menu, use Add to Wish list. The Wish list area lets you review, download, and remove saved items.
Part 17 - NFB-NEWSLINE
17.1 Sign In and Download NEWSLINE Material
What you will learn: Use an NFB-NEWSLINE account directly from the eReader.
Before you begin: You need Wi-Fi plus your NFB-NEWSLINE ID and security code.
Exactly how to do it
Press S1 for Main Menu.
Open Online Services.
Open NFB Newsline.
The first time, enter your numeric Newsline ID preceded by the braille number sign.
Enter the numeric security code the same way.
Press Enter and wait for “Login successful.”
Open Publication Management.
Choose Sync Now to download the latest issues for subscribed/Favorite publications.
After downloading, return to Book Reader > Book List to read the publications.
What should happen: Newsline material downloads and appears in Book Reader.
If that does not happen: If login fails, confirm ID/security code and Wi-Fi.
Practice: Open Publication Management and identify Sync Now.
Reading Newsline: NLS states that Newsline articles are usually navigation level 3 and sections usually level 2. While reading, use N-Up/N-Down to select a navigation level and N-Left/N-Right to move to the previous/next item at that level.
Part 18 - File Manager
18.1 Open and Browse File Manager
What you will learn: Find internal, USB, and SD files.
Before you begin: Be at Main Menu.
Exactly how to do it
Navigate to File Manager or type f (dots 1-2-4).
Press Enter.
The internal files area is always available.
Use N-Up/N-Down through storage locations. USB files and SD Card files appear only when connected.
Press Enter on a storage location.
Use N-Up/N-Down through folders/files.
Folder names have a slash symbol before them.
Press Enter on a folder to open it.
Use N-Left and N-Right to navigate the folder hierarchy.
What should happen: You can browse internal and attached storage.
If that does not happen: If USB or SD does not appear, remove and reconnect it and wait for recognition.
Practice: Open internal files, enter a folder, and return.
18.2 File Manager Menus
Press S2 for File Manager Menu: Sort by Name, Type, Date New First, Size, or Create Directory.
Press S3 for file Context Menu: Open, Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete, File Info, Select, Unselect, Toggle selection, Select All, and Unselect All.
Part 19 - NLS Cartridge, USB Flash Drive, and SD Card
19.1 Copy an NLS Cartridge Automatically
What you will learn: Load braille books from an NLS cartridge.
Before you begin: Use the supplied NLS cartridge-to-USB cable.
Exactly how to do it
Orient the eReader with braille cells closest to you.
On the RIGHT side, locate the farthest-back port: USB-A.
Connect the NLS cartridge to the cartridge cable.

What should happen: The cartridge books are copied to internal storage and appear in Book List.
If that does not happen: If Powersave is on, NLS notes Auto Copy works only while you are in File Manager or Book List. Move there and reconnect the cartridge if needed.
Practice: Locate USB-A by touch without confusing it with USB-C.
A USB flash drive connects directly to USB-A. An SD card inserts into the SD-card slot on the LEFT side behind the lanyard attachment point. Use File Manager to browse these devices.
Part 20 - Settings
Open Settings from Main Menu by moving to Settings or typing s (dots 2-3-4), then press Enter.
Book Reader Settings: condense blank lines, formatting, spaces, line-down behavior, Autoscroll, book contraction, reflow, and related reading options.
File Manager Settings: includes delete confirmation.
Braille Settings: braille display/input choices.
Device Settings: device-wide behavior such as word wrap and power settings.

The eReader can display content in contracted or uncontracted braille according to settings and document type. The global command Space+g (dots 1-2-4-5) switches braille grade in supported contexts.
21.1 Change Braille Grade
What you will learn: Switch between available braille presentation modes.
Before you begin: Open a book or text where grade switching is supported.
Exactly how to do it
Hold Space.
Press dots 1-2-4-5 (the braille letter g).
Release the keys.
Read the status change/message.
Read a familiar sentence to confirm the result.
What should happen: Braille presentation changes between available grade settings.
If that does not happen: If the content is already a prepared BRF, translation behavior can differ. Review Braille Settings and the file type.
Practice: Switch grade and restore your preferred setting.
Part 22 - Wi-Fi
22.1 Connect to a Visible Wi-Fi Network
What you will learn: Join a wireless network directly from the eReader.
Before you begin: Know the exact network name and password.
Exactly how to do it
Press S1 for Main Menu.
Open Settings.
Open Wi-Fi Settings.
Confirm Wi-Fi is on. Press Enter on the Wi-Fi on/off item if needed.
Open Visible Wi-Fi Networks.
Use N-Up/N-Down until your exact network name appears.
Press Enter.
Press Enter on Join.
Enter the password in uncontracted UEB unless you deliberately choose another input code through S3.
Navigate to OK and press Enter.
Wait for the connection result.
What should happen: The eReader connects to the selected network.
If that does not happen: If connection fails, check password capitalization, UEB symbols/numbers, network signal, and input braille code.
Practice: Open Known Wi-Fi Networks after connecting and confirm the network is present.
22.2 Optional autowifi.txt Method
NLS documents an alternate method: create a plain text file named autowifi.txt with the network name on line 1 and password on line 2, place it in the root of a USB flash drive or SD card, then insert it while the eReader is on. This exposes the Wi-Fi password in plain text on that media, so protect or delete the file afterward.

Before you begin: The eReader is on.

Press S1 for Main Menu.
Open Settings.
Navigate to Bluetooth Mode.
Press Enter.
The display should read BT.
Alternative: tap the Power On button and activate the routing button over BT when that quick mode menu is presented.
To toggle Bluetooth on or off globally, use Space+t (dots 2-3-4-5) as documented by NLS.
What should happen: BT appears and the eReader is ready for Bluetooth connection/pairing.
If that does not happen: If the external device cannot see the EMZ-20, leave Bluetooth Mode, toggle Bluetooth, re-enter it, and restart both devices if necessary.
Practice: Enter Bluetooth Mode and return to Main Menu.
Part 25 - Connect to iPhone or iPad
25.1 Pair EMZ-20 with VoiceOver
What you will learn: Use the eReader as an iPhone/iPad braille display and braille keyboard.
Before you begin: VoiceOver should be enabled on the iPhone/iPad.
Exactly how to do it
EMZ-20: Enter Bluetooth Mode. The display should read BT.
iPhone/iPad: Open Settings.
Open Accessibility.
Open VoiceOver.
Open Braille.
Move to the bottom area labeled Choose a Braille Display.
Find “NLS eReader Z” followed by the last five digits of your eReader serial number. VoiceOver should say it is not paired.
Double-tap the NLS eReader entry.
When prompted for the PIN, enter 1111 on the iPhone/iPad.
Double-tap Pair.
Wait for pairing.
Move VoiceOver focus on the iPhone/iPad and verify the EMZ-20 braille changes.
Open an editable field and test braille keyboard input.
Press a cursor-routing button and confirm VoiceOver/caret movement where supported.
What should happen: iPhone/iPad content appears on the 20-cell display and braille keyboard input works.
If that does not happen: If the device does not appear or pair, NLS recommends powering off both devices, turning the eReader back on, then the iOS device, and repeating the process. If paired but braille is blank, touch/move focus on the iOS screen.
Practice: Perform the three tests: output, input, routing.
Part 26 - Connect to Mac with VoiceOver
26.1 Pair EMZ-20 with a Mac
What you will learn: Use the EMZ-20 as a VoiceOver braille display over Bluetooth.
Before you begin: VoiceOver is running on the Mac.
Exactly how to do it
EMZ-20: Enter Bluetooth Mode.
Mac: Open VoiceOver Utility. The NLS guide describes VO+F8; depending on current Mac function-key settings, Fn may also be needed.
In VoiceOver Utility, select Braille.
Move to Displays and activate it.
Move to Add and activate it.
Find “NLS eReader Zoomax” followed by the eReader serial number in the Bluetooth devices table.
Interact with the eReader row using VoiceOver interaction commands.
Move to Pair and activate it.
When prompted, enter 1111 and press Return.
Press Escape to leave device selection.
Close VoiceOver Utility when finished.
Test braille output with VoiceOver navigation, then test input and routing.
What should happen: VoiceOver content appears on the EMZ-20 and supported commands/input work.
If that does not happen: If the Mac cannot find the eReader, confirm Bluetooth Mode and restart Bluetooth/device pairing. If it pairs but no braille appears, verify the display is added in VoiceOver Utility > Braille.
Practice: Navigate several Mac controls and confirm the braille display follows VoiceOver.
Part 27 - Connect to Windows or Mac by USB
27.1 Put the EMZ-20 into USB Mode
What you will learn: Use the USB-C port as a wired braille-display connection.
Before you begin: Use a data-capable USB cable; the supplied charging cable is documented for this purpose.
Exactly how to do it
EMZ-20: Press S1 and open Settings.
Open USB Mode. The display should read USB.
Alternative: tap Power On and activate the routing button over USB when the quick mode menu is available.
On the RIGHT side, locate USB-C: it is directly behind the two small round power buttons and before the USB-A port.
Connect the USB-C end to the EMZ-20.
Connect the other end to the Windows PC or Mac.
Open your screen reader’s braille display settings and select the NLS/Zoomax eReader device as appropriate.
Test output, keyboard input, and routing.
What should happen: Computer screen-reader content appears on the EMZ-20.
If that does not happen: If the eReader only charges but does not connect, verify USB Mode, use a data-capable cable, and configure the display in the screen reader.
Practice: Connect by USB and complete all three connection tests.
Part 28 - Use with JAWS and NVDA
NLS documents EMZ-20 compatibility with JAWS and NVDA on Windows. Exact braille-driver wording can change as screen readers update, so use the current JAWS/NVDA braille settings together with the EMZ-20 USB/Bluetooth mode.
28.1 Verify with JAWS
What you will learn: Confirm JAWS is sending braille to the eReader.
Before you begin: EMZ-20 is connected by supported USB/Bluetooth method and in the correct mode.
Exactly how to do it
Start JAWS.
Open JAWS Braille settings / display configuration.
Add or select the NLS eReader Zoomax/compatible eReader entry presented by your JAWS version.
Choose the correct connection if prompted.
Apply the settings.
Move JAWS focus to another control and verify braille output changes.
Open Notepad and type using the EMZ-20 keyboard.
Use a cursor-routing button and verify the caret/focus responds.

Connect the AC adapter to a known working outlet.
Allow charging time if the battery may be deeply discharged.
Press the first small round power button from the front: Power On.
Listen for startup tones.
If there is still no response, test another appropriate cable/adapter or contact your NLS network library.
What should happen: The device starts or you have isolated a likely power problem.
If that does not happen: If the battery/case becomes unusually hot, swollen, damaged, or smells unusual, stop using/charging it and contact the library/support.
Practice: Review the physical power/charging layout without connecting cables.
30.2 Wi-Fi Will Not Connect
What you will learn: Separate password/input problems from network problems.
Before you begin: Know the correct network and password.

Confirm Wi-Fi is on under Settings > Wi-Fi Settings.
Confirm you selected the exact network name.
Re-enter the password carefully.
Confirm the braille input code used for the password.
Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point if signal is weak.
Try another known network if available to determine whether the problem is the eReader or the original network.
What should happen: The eReader connects or the failure is narrowed to credentials/network.
If that does not happen: If the network uses a browser/captive portal, the eReader may not be able to complete that login because it does not provide a general web browser.
Practice: Reconnect to a known network.
30.3 Paired to iPhone but No Braille Appears
What you will learn: Restore VoiceOver braille output.
Before you begin: The eReader is shown as paired.
Exactly how to do it
Touch or move VoiceOver focus on the iPhone/iPad.
Confirm VoiceOver is on.
Return to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Braille and confirm the NLS eReader is connected.
Confirm the EMZ-20 is still in/available for Bluetooth display use.
Toggle Bluetooth if necessary.
Restart both devices and re-pair if the connection remains unusable.
